  • Why Monitoring Works

    Why Monitoring Works

One of the best ways to protect your property and your belongings is to install a monitored security system. Monitored security systems ensure that your home is watched over 24-hours a day by our trained staff at the central monitoring station. In the event of a break-in attempt, our central station operators are able to quickly react to the situation to dispatch the authorities so that the appropriate actions can be taken.

Security ONE’s central monitoring is not only ULC listed, it one of only 50 in North America to be Five Diamond Certified. Video surveillance cameras make an excellent addition to a monitored alarm system, because it can be used to identify, arrest and even sentence criminals in connection with their crimes. Criminals do not want to be caught at the scene of a crime, and security cameras ensure do just that. Video footage can place an individual at the scene and determine exactly what role he or she had in the crime. For those same reasons, cameras act as a great deterant.

  • Dumb Criminal – Easy To Track

Dumb Criminal – Easy To Track

Let’s just go ahead and give this guy the title of “World’s Dumbest Criminal – EVER”. For starters, Brandon Campbell got himself arrested for stealing a GPS Navigation device. He was released, but fitted with an ankle monitor – you know, to track his GPS location at all times.

    ankle nl
If the irony hasn’t already gotten the best of you, wait. There’s more. So much more. You’d think it would be fair to assume that he knew what these gadgets do. But did this slow old Brandon down? Nope. He was accused of burglarizing as many as fifteen homes taking $90,000 of merchandise while sporting his fashionable ankle accessory.
After Campbell was caught, prosecutors didn’t exactly have a tough time putting together a case against him. After all, the ankle monitor allowed them to track his whereabouts and provided proof that he was at the scene of each burglary when the crime was going down.

Here’s where the story gets better – and old Brandon lays claim to our title:
After Brandon served his time for the 15 break-ins, the DA’s office says a thief ransacked a home swiping electronics and jewelry. You’re thinking it was Brandon right? Yup. It was Brandon. While he no longer had the ankle monitor on, investigators say the thief did leave something behind at the scene of the crime: a pop can.
The can was eventually tested for DNA and scored a hit with Campbell, whose particulars were on record owing to previous arrests cataloged on his criminal record.
He is now facing 47 years in the clink – or we like to call it, the Dumb Criminal’s Hall of Fame!

  • Apartment And Condo Security

    Apartment And Condo Security

Contrary to popular belief, apartments and condos are common targets for criminals

It’s easy to think that living in an apartment or condo means that you don’t have to worry about security. Nothing could be further from the truth. Apartments and condos are repeatedly targeted by criminals. What makes it easy for criminals is that people living in apartments and condos don’t dedicate enough resources to security, so once a criminal gets inside a building, he knows that it will be fairly easy to break into and rob multiple units.

    apartment foyer

Breaking and entering is one of the most common offences in Canada. On average, there is one break-in every three minutes in Canada.

Here are some crucial tips that will help you prevent apartment and condo crime.

    • When you move into a new apartment or condominium unit, change your locks.
    • Securely lock your doors and windows when you’re not at home. Especially if you live on the ground floor or have a balcony.
    • When you’re entering your building make sure that no one sneaks in behind you.
    • Some condos and apartments come with alarm systems installed. Be sure to use it. A home with a monitored security system is three times less likely to broken into.
    • If your unit doesn’t have an alarm system, you should seriously consider getting one. Wireless alarm systems are easy to install and can further protect you against fire and water damage.

    Seconds Save Lives

While not having a smoke detector is an obvious danger and safety hazard, having a faulty or improper one may be even riskier. Don’t wait until it’s too late; be sure you have an effective and reliable monitored smoke detector.

The last thing you want to do after a fire is wonder why smoke detector didn’t work, or didn’t respond in time. And it’s also why you want to make sure you are testing your devices on a regular basis. Remember, a smoke detector should be changed every 10 years.

    change_your_smoke_alarm_battery

Tests have shown that photoelectric smoke detectors respond 30 to 40 minutes faster to smoldering fires. Studies have shown for years that a majority of fire fatalities were from smoke inhalation as opposed to actual flames.

Having a smoke detector with better sensitivity to the initial stages of a fire means more time to escape safely in the event of a fire. After all, in emergencies, seconds save lives.

  • Back to School Routine

    Back to School Routine

And so the end of summer is upon us. For parents everywhere, it’s the most wonderful time of the year! But it also means it’s time to get back into the school routine. Going from lazy summer days to the full-on mad dash out the door can be a serious shock to the system. Here are a few ways to make the transition from summer to school a little easier.

    Bedtime

I can already hear kids everywhere complaining! But,  start with moving back bedtime. Try starting with small increments like 5-10 minutes a day. This will give kids’ bodies a period of adjustment. It should also help combat the  “IT’S NOT FAIR” argument!

Bringing back bedtime rituals that may have slipped over the summer such as taking baths and reading. That should also help kids hit the hay a little earlier. Oh and no TV/Computer/Smart-Device time before bed. It’s too stimulating.

    Set the Alarm

In addition to reinstating the bedtime rule, start setting the alarm clock. Do this gradually. Again, try work in 10-15 minute increments. This will help the transition from lazy summer mornings to early wake-ups easier. Open up the curtins.. Natural sunlight is much better to get the troops up-and-at-‘em than repeating the “get out of bed.” incantation!

Be ready for the school lunch

Whether  you pack your children’s lunches or have them pack their own,  start stocking the fridge and cupboards school food — water bottles, juice boxes, lunch boxes, snacks, fruits and veggies. Repackage items like grapes and carrots in baggies. This will makes lunches easier to throw together as the kids jet out the door.

    Getting Dressed

Here’s one more thing that can help mornings run more smoothly the first week or two back—put outfits together ahead of time.

Getting back into the school routine doesn’t have to be a major production with a little planning and by easing into it.

Our award-winning app Total Connect from Honeywell is the perfect addition to your security system, allowing you to see in real-time on your smart device or PC when your kinds get home from school. We just LOVE stories of Dumb Criminals, and this one’s a doozy! We found this guy in England…

Bumbling Zach Jackson, 19, will be wishing he just made a mental note after his list found its way into officers’ hands and contained other such words of wisdom as ‘warm up before doing it’.

Jackson assaulted his victim, also 19, and stole her phone when she was returning home from a night out with friends in Blackpool. His victim’s father used her phone signal to track its location before informing the police who, while arresting Jackson, found his step-by-step guide to the crime.

Preston Crown Court was told that Jackson was hiding in a doorway pretending to talk on a phone and attacked the victim when she asked him for a cigarette.

    By Owen Wolter
A local security alarm company gets the credit for helping to catch the man who allegedly robbed Subway restaurants five time in Windsor.
Security One Alarm Systems says their hold up alarm system, combined with video surveillance, helped to identify the suspect.

Police arrested a man allegedly responsible for the robberies in Toronto.
In each robbery, a lone male suspect entered the restaurants and demanded money from the tills. No weapon was seen in any of the incidents.
Robertson praised video surveillance for being a very effective tool to combat crime, noting crime stats from Windsor Police show a break and enter, or attempted break and enter, happens almost every 5.5 hours in the city.

It’s easy to want to leave your windows open during the summer to let in a breeze are to cool down the house, but it is also an invitation to burglars. When you’re not home, make sure your windows are closed – and locked. Use a bar for sliding glass doors, deadbolts for the main doors, and window bars on windows that are easily accessible.

  • Lessons Learned From Bonduelle Fire

    Lessons Learned From Bonduelle Fire

The recent fire and public evacuation order at The Bonduelle plant in Tecumseh brings to mind the importance of having – and knowing – a safety plan for your workplace.

Given the nature and size of the fire, and the extent of the evacuation area, we are all breathing a very big sigh of relief that the local media has reported that were no injuries at all from this fire.

    Extinguisher

Be sure you are personally aware of your company’s emergency plans. If you are not already familiar, ask for a copy. If your workplace does not have one, you may consider volunteering to help design one.

Make sure every employee knows the exit routes and evacuation plans in your building.

Make sure every employee knows at least two exit routes from each room in the building. Be able to exit in the dark.

    emergency lighting

Make sure every employee knows the location of the fire extinguisher(s) and medical kits.

Have a designated meeting area that every employee will go to. Make sure there are special emergency plans in place to address any special needs of individual employees.

Ensure that fire exits and doorways, halls, or stairways are never blocked. Keep fire doors closed to help slow the spread of smoke and fire.

Keep your own emergency kit in a desk drawer. Useful items include a flashlight, walking shoes, a water bottle, non perishable food, and a small first aid kit.

Keep a list of important safety numbers such as your spouse’s work number, and your children’s school number at your desk.

Determine how employees will help others in the event of evacuation orders. Are there employees who would temporarily house, feed, or transport fellow employees?
