  • Home Security Assessment Checklist

    Home Security Assessment Checklist

A home security assessment is essential to find weaknesses in your security plan, making it more difficult for criminals to break in.

This checklist is designed to help you identify weak spots in and around your home.
While nothing is “burglar-proof”, these recommendations help create layers of security that can reduce the opportunity for criminals to force entry into your home.

Use this checklist to reduce any security weaknesses around your home, then make the necessary changes.

Make sure your house numbers are visible from the street, or applied to your mailbox properly to help emergency responders find your home.

Prune all shrubs & trees away from the sidewalks, driveway, porch, doorway windows and gates to eliminate hiding places.

Trim or prune any bushes under a window below the sill. Again, this eliminates places to hide.

Prune any tall bushes from the ground up to expose any feet or legs from hiding.

Cut or prune tree branches upward at least 6 ft. to keep a clear view both onto and out of your property

Make sure you have proper lighting at the front, rear and side of the house. Mount any motion activated lights under the eaves trough to reduce vandalism.

Privacy fences are nice, but keep in mind they provide privacy for burglars as well. Be sure a privacy fence is not easy to scale, and if possible, lock the gate.

Doors should have a solid core with deadbolt locks and guard plates to hinder prying.

  • Camera Solutions

    Camera Solutions

Security cameras are an excellent way to secure your property. Whether its your home or business, having security cameras installed provides you with an extra level of security protection and peace of mind.
If you’ve been thinking about adding security cameras, it’s important to understand the different options available to you. It’s also very important to consider that your needs are different than just about anyone else’s.

    HB71S_hi

Here is what you need to consider when adding cameras.

    • What area do you want to cover?
The size and shape of the area you want to cover will determine a lot about the camera set-up that you require. A very large area, or an area with many rooms will likely require more cameras than a smaller area or a single room.

    • What are the lighting conditions?
You’ll need to know if your cameras will be working in low-light conditions. If there is a lot of bright sunlight, that could negatively affect the quality of the footage. If orconditions change throughout the day in this area, it will play a factor as well.

    • How much video storage is required?
You’ll need to consider if you need to keep the footage from your cameras for just one day, a few weeks, or for several months. You’ll need to choose the camera and NVR that suits your needs.

    • Do you want remote access?
Like most everything else nowadays, security cameras can be remotely accessed from your smartphone, tablet and PC. Consider if you want to be able to view  your cameras remotely, if you want to receive alerts when motion is detected, or when the kids get home from school. We can provide smart home solutions that are custom designed for your specific needs.

May 11, 2016 – (London, ON) Security ONE Alarm Systems, a super regional electronic security and automation company headquartered in Leamington, ON, has acquired customer accounts from Homematix Systems, Inc. The purchase adds approximately 500 accounts to the Security ONE Southwestern Ontario customer base.
“Homematix commitment to providing customers with outstanding service makes them a great fit for Security ONE,” says Corey Robertson, Director of Marketing for Security ONE. “They have been serving their community for 43 years, and we are proud to introduce Homematix customers to the local Security ONE team.”
The purchase of Homematix is the first acquisition for Security ONE this year, following the acquisition of customer accounts from Gladiator Security in Windsor, ON last fall. Security ONE has been active in the acquisition arena and continues to challenge national competitors for local market share. Director of Corporate Strategy, Chris Neumann says, “Our goal is to provide the absolute best technology combined with local monitoring and prompt and courteous service. When it comes to real security – you don’t want to leave that to the cable guy.”
Robertson notes Homematix customers will have access to the advanced automated and smart home solutions, video surveillance, access control and fire & life safety solutions offered by Security ONE.
“Most notably Security ONE is the only ULC listed, CSAA Five Diamond Certified monitoring station in Southern Ontario, which offers the secure MySecurityONE online account management portal,” Robertson said.
Robertson says Security ONE has been transitioning customers. “The Homematix customers have been very receptive to our offerings, especially the GSM Cellular modules”, he said. “They have been very happy knowing that they are being provided with local monitoring now,” Robertson added.
The purchased accounts will be serviced from the Security ONE/Homematix office at 2237 Wharncliffe Rd. S. in London, ON. Homematix customers are currently being introduced and welcomed to Security ONE.

  • Alternatives To Landlines

    Alternatives To Landlines

When the recent break in at the Kingsvlle Arena, where thieves cut the phone to defeat the security system, caused Town officials to turn to Security ONE to provide a solution, we wanted to be sure we could provide that same solution to home owners as well.
That same solution may also allow you to cut your landline telephone as well, saving you hundreds of dollars a year.

    kingsville1

With the cost of cell phone plans dropping, and the expense of keeping land lines becoming redundant, many people are getting rid of their home phones and using mobile devices as their primary method of communication. In the past, this meant that you couldn’t have a security system in your house, or that you had to install a phone line for your system to communicate directly with the monitoring center. But, as telephone technology advances, so does ours.

In the event  you decide to cancel your landline phone service, Security ONE has other options available such as WiFi Connectivity and Cellular Communication Modules. These alternatives to traditional landlines provide uninterrupted security protection for your home or business.

    Local-Monitoring

If your phone line goes down, either due to an outage or being cut by an intruder, Security ONE’s Cellular Module Monitoring is there to keep you protected Security ONE’s Cellular Monitoring is a reliable communications solution that automatically sends a wireless signal to our Central Station to report all alarms, instantly and securely. Further, the advanced wireless technology enables you to receive alarm signals via mobile text message or email – anytime, anyplace.

Go wireless. You can rely on Security ONE’s Cellular Module Monitoring and WiFi connectivity solutions as your first line of defense for your home or business if you decide to cancel your landline phone service.
Further, Security ONE’s Cellular Module Monitoring offers a cost savings solution for homes or businesses that want to it as their primary security communication device, allowing you to pay only a minimal charge for wireless service instead of paying for costly dedicated phone lines. • Thwarted By Neighbour

    Thwarted By Neighbour

Another recent crime has highlighted the importance of having a monitored security system.
    download
Police in Amherstburg have closed the books on a break in they say was thwarted by a neighbour that was in the right place, at the right time, looking in the right direction.
Police say the break in happened in broad daylight, and that a neighbour saw the accused climb through a window into a house. That neighbour then called police.

The report says the burglar came out the same window used to gain entry, and was met by waiting police officers. A 22 year old resident of Amherstburg was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, and possession of breaking and entering tools.

Police say that a home with monitored security is three times less likely to be broken into. They also say that having 24 hour monitoring alerts police to incidents like this at all hours of the day.

  • Arena Break In

    Arena Break In

Essex County OPP are still investigating a recent break in at the Kingsville Arena in which an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.
    opp1
Police say the theft was discovered by Arena employees arriving for work the next day. The report also says a window was smashed, and entry was gained into an office.

According to a story in Windsor Star, cash was stolen from the office and an ATM.
The Star article reports that the burglars disabled the security system by cutting the telephone line.
That’s when Kingville Town officials reached out to Security ONE. The security monitoring was being done by a different company at the time of the break in. In addition to providing the security monitoring, Security ONE was able to provide Fire Monitoring, as well as monitoring the ice temperature on the rink.
Security ONE’s consultants were also able to provide a solution for cutting a phone line to defeat the security system: a GSM Cellular Module.
The GSM Cellular Module transmits directly to Security ONE’s ULC listed, Five Diamond Certified central monitoring station without relying on another company’s service and, more importantly, with out relying on an actual line or cable that could be cut with a $2 pair of wire cutters.

  • Spring Fire Safety

    Spring Fire Safety

Fire officials recommend testing your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors at least twice a year. While the easiest time to do that is when you change your clocks, you may have forgotten to do this important task. Here are some fire safety tips you need to know.

    change_your_smoke_alarm_battery

If your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors are battery operated, change the batteries twice per year in the spring and in the fall. If the devices are hard wired, test them to make sure they are working properly.

Its also a good time to review all of your fire safety items:

    • Check all electrical cords to make sure they are old and frayed
    • Clean up dead grass, leaves and other bushes around the yard that could be a fire hazard
    • Check fire extinguishers and have them serviced if necessary
    • Go over the family fire escape plan
    • Clean out the BBQ and have fuel repairs if necessary

Fire officials recommend changing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors every 7 years.
