  • Winter Safety

    Winter Safety

With the changing weather comes a host of to-do items around your home. Being aware of your surroundings will help keep you safe as the seasons change from fall to winter.
You should always be thinking of fire safety around the house, but maybe a little more at this time of year, because we have more appliances to plug in. If you didn’t change the batteries in your smoke detector when you set your clocks back, do so! Make sure your family has a well-rehearsed escape plan as well.

Do a quick check around the house to make sure there are no flammable substances near your furnace that have been left out from a summer project.
Don’t put your space heater too close to your bed, curtains, or furniture. Shut them off when you’re not using them, and never leave them unattended. Do not use them to dry off wet clothing like mittens or hats.
If you have a chimney, make sure it totally clear so your fire can breathe. Do a quick visual inspection of the bricks on the outside to see that it is in good condition. Keep matches, lighters and candles away from children and pets.
Winter safety while doing your outside inspection, look for bad windowsills, loose shingles, and slanting concrete. Check all the outdoor light fixtures, and clean your gutters or eaves troughs.

  • Peace of Mind After Brutal Attack

Peace of Mind After Brutal Attack

Fresh off of being presented with a sixth consecutive Excellence in Community Service Award from the Honeywell Security Group, Security ONE continues giving back to the community with a Christmas surprise.

Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call on Wigle St in Leamington back in June of 2018 to find 36- year old Haifa Gebrail with serious injuries after being assaulted in her home. A 44-year old man was arrested at the time and charged with attempted murder.

“We just want her to go back to living a normal life,” says Sam Sleiman, of Leamington. Earlier this year, his niece, Haifa Gebrail, also of Leamington was brutally attacked and left for dead. “Haifa is a survivor, a thriver, and a fighter”, he said.

Gebrail has spent the last six months recovering in hospital and has been released and is now living on her own again. “She suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and sometimes has trouble sleeping,” Sleiman said.

In September of 2018, Security ONE Alarm Systems launched their 5th annual “Who Deserves To Win” contest and received over 200 nominations over two months. Haifa Gebrail was the overwhelming winner.

Sales & Loyalty Manager, Corey Robertson says this year’s winner was something special. “What happened to Haifa is every person’s worst nightmare. It’s the kind of crime you only see on TV or in the movies”, he said. “We’ve seen the Leamington community rally around Haifa, and we couldn’t be prouder to help give her and her family the peace of mind, and protection, they deserve.”

A short video of the big day, including the installation and candid interviews with the family, can be seen on Security ONE’s YouTube channel.

In addition to arming doors and windows, Robertson says there one more critical piece to Gebrail’s security system. “We’ve outfitted Haifa with Personal Emergency Response Button with GPS and 2-way voice communication that will work anywhere in North America”, says Robertson. “She’ll be able to take this device with her anywhere she goes, knowing that help is only the push of a button away.”

Christmas for the Gebrail family will be a lot more peaceful this year. “Old Haifa passed away”, a beaming Gebrail announced, “New Haifa is here to stay. I’m so thankful to this community and to Security ONE.”

  • Security Tips for Small Businesses

    Security Tips for Small Businesses

Security & Safety Tips for Small Businesses

    Install Emergency alarms
Local regulations will most likely include installing fire and CO2 alarms. Make sure these are always tested so in the event of a fire or high levels of CO2 employees will be notified. Go above and beyond and install extra alarms because it is better to be safe than sorry.

    Protect your digital assets
Cyber security is a growing risk, especially with more elements of a business being made digital. Pay for security software and keep it updated, it is better to pay now than pay later. Make sure all employees are taught how to properly and securely use any computer systems. Do not download anything from potential malicious websites.

    Protect important Company assets
It’s important to always be prepared, a break-in or robbery can occur at anytime. Make sure that all files are kept in locked storage that is waterproofed if possible. Employee files, tax documents, invoices and other documents should be safely stored. Fire proof storage would also be beneficial, but if not possible create duplicates of documents and either digitally store them or keep them at another location. A spare key should also be kept off-site.

    Install a security system
Surveillance cameras are a great way to prevent crime. Criminals are less likely to break-in to a business if there are visible security cameras. Monitored security systems are available, making your business protected at all times. Criminals may “scope out” your business before breaking in, if you catch any suspicious activity, report it to the local authorities.

  • 7 Easy Home Security Tips

    7 Easy Home Security Tips

    7 Easy Home Security Tips!

    Landscape with security in mind

Clean up any overgrown patches where burglars could hide. Don’t hide your spare keys in any obvious spots or get a lockbox to make it more difficult to access your home.

    Introduce yourself to your neighbors

Work together with neighbors and keep an eye out for them. If there is suspicious activity and you are sure there is a problem, call the police and report it.

    Add Lighting

Motion activated lighting outdoors and lights on timers indoors should be used as burglary prevention. That way, it will seem as if someone is home even if there isn’t anyone there.

    Get a Safety Routine

Lock all doors and windows, check that your alarm system is activated every time you leave the house. After doing this many times consistently you will do it automatically.

    Manage Visibility

Put any valuables out of site and make sure there isn’t anything in front of windows that can be looked in from the outside. Make sure you can see who is at the front door without opening it.

    Protect Outdoor Valuables

Lock up any BBQ’s, lawn furniture and pool supplies. Anything else should be kept in a locked shed or garage. Don’t give hooligans a reason to steal or break your things!

Create a Plan for when you’re Away

Have your mail held or have a neighbor remove flyer’s and newspapers. Make sure anything valuable is locked up. Arrange for someone to cut the lawn or remove snow, it will seem as if someone is home.

  • Who Deserves to Win Press Release

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Local Security Company Steps Up to Help Women’s Shelter
    December 11,2017 – (Windsor, ON)

The Hiatus House, a social service agency offering confidential intervention for families experiencing domestic violence, was the lucky winner of Security ONE’s fourth annual “Who Deserves to Win” contest. Security and life-safety is taken very seriously at the Hiatus House as many women and children rely on the refuge that the building provides.

Chris Neumann, Director of Corporate Strategy for Security ONE was thrilled that Hiatus House was this year’s recipient. “When we heard that the Hiatus House was in need of a new fire monitoring solution and panic buttons, we jumped at the chance to assist,” said Neumann. “We’ve been a partner with the Hiatus House for over a decade and we have a team member who’s Fiancée works there, so the Organization is near and dear to our heart.”

Mimicking previous years, the Security ONE team produced a short film highlighting the installation and showcases several interviews with key Hiatus House staff including Executive Director, Tom Rolfe. Rolfe was ecstatic that Security ONE could assist and update their fire alarm system because “the last thing we want is some kind of breach in our [fire &] security” said Rolfe.

Jeff Tavares, Service Manager for Security ONE was looking forward to this day for a longtime. “Our technicians and sales staff love this contest. We all wear Santa Hats and wrap the equipment like Christmas gifts. Everyone gets a hands-on appreciation of the peace of mind we provide day in and day out to our clients,” added Tavares.

Corey Robertson, Director of Marketing, summed it up perfectly. “This is why we do what we do. We’ve got a pretty great job when we get to go home at the end of the day, knowing that we we’ve been able to help someone be more safe and secure.”
