    Spring Fire Safety

Fire officials recommend testing your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors at least twice a year. While the easiest time to do that is when you change your clocks, you may have forgotten to do this important task. Here are some fire safety tips you need to know.

If your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors are battery operated, change the batteries twice per year in the spring and in the fall. If the devices are hard wired, test them to make sure they are working properly.

Its also a good time to review all of your fire safety items:

    • Check all electrical cords to make sure they are old and frayed
    • Clean up dead grass, leaves and other bushes around the yard that could be a fire hazard
    • Check fire extinguishers and have them serviced if necessary
    • Go over the family fire escape plan
    • Clean out the BBQ and have fuel repairs if necessary

Fire officials recommend changing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors every 7 years.

  • More Than Just Break-Ins

    More Than Just Break-Ins

We all know that having a security system protects your home and family from intruders. In fact, statistics tell us that homes with a monitored security system are 3-times less likely to be broken into. But having a monitored security system provides so much more protection than just break-ins.

    Tackling Burglary

Ours alarm systems provide additional protection for your family and home by tying your Smoke Detectors into the alarm panel. This means that each specific smoke detector becomes its own zone, and in the event of an alarm, we are able to determine precisely which device has triggered the alarm. Imagine the peace of mind you’ll have every time you leave the house knowing your smoke detectors are being monitored as well.

It is now a law in Ontario that Carbon Monoxide Detectors are installed on each floor of homes with gas burning appliances or attached garages. Carbon Monoxide is known as the “Silent Killer” because it is a gas that you cannot smell. Similar to a smoke detector, each Carbon Monoxide detector can be monitored as its own zone through your security system.

  • The Wrong Smoke Detectors

    The Wrong Smoke Detectors

Most houses have smoke detectors installed but many of them could be the incorrect type—and potentially deadly.

There are two major kinds, ionization and photoelectric. Ionization are the most common. In fact the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says 90% of all smoke detectors are ionization.

Ionization alarms use a small bit of radioactive material to trip the alarm when it detects large burning particles, have been shown to be less able to detect slow-burning or smoldering fires, such as those caused by cigarettes, frayed wires, and sparks from a still-smoldering fireplace.

Statistics show 30,000 people in the U.S. have died since 1990 because they relied on ionization detectors. That’s because an ionization alarm can sometimes take between 20 and even 50 minutes longer to activate than a photoelectric smoke alarm.

So why do ionization alarms get placed in homes?

    Answer: They’re cheaper.

So what’s the best way to protect your family—besides not smoking and otherwise fireproofing your home and holding regular exit drills?

Invest in photoelectric alarms in bedrooms and hallways, and leave the ionization alarms in the kitchen, if at all.

In addition, make sure they are properly placed high on walls or ceilings, are hardwired (preferably by a licensed electrician), which means they don’t rely on battery power, and are interconnected so if one sounds they all sound.

    Seconds Save Lives

While not having a smoke detector is an obvious danger and safety hazard, having a faulty or improper one may be even riskier. Don’t wait until it’s too late; be sure you have an effective and reliable monitored smoke detector.

The last thing you want to do after a fire is wonder why smoke detector didn’t work, or didn’t respond in time. And it’s also why you want to make sure you are testing your devices on a regular basis. Remember, a smoke detector should be changed every 10 years.

Tests have shown that photoelectric smoke detectors respond 30 to 40 minutes faster to smoldering fires. Studies have shown for years that a majority of fire fatalities were from smoke inhalation as opposed to actual flames.

Having a smoke detector with better sensitivity to the initial stages of a fire means more time to escape safely in the event of a fire. After all, in emergencies, seconds save lives.
