  • Don’t Leave Your Keys

    Don’t Leave Your Keys

According to an article on Windsorite Dot CA, Windsor Police say that here have been 388 vehicles stolen in Windsor so far this year and 50 of these were stolen simply by people leaving their spare keys in the vehicle.

With the cold weather finally here to stay for the season, it is easy to want to leave your car running while doing errands. Consider this: The same article says that since October Windsor Police report 17 vehicles stolen where the keys were left inside and the doors were left unlocked. In some instances the key set also contained house keys and the suspects also broke into the owner’s home. These stolen vehicles are also frequently used to commit other criminal offences.

In the article, Police say that owners need to be mindful of their insurance policy because leaving keys in the vehicle may potentially void their coverage.

While many new vehicles come with a keyless push button start while having your key fob. This technological advancement may be convenient but do not leave keys in vehicles. Lock your car doors and take your keys with you.

In addition to locking your vehicle, never leaving the keys in the ignition and keeping valuables out of sight, other important vehicle safety tips include:

    • Using a car security system such as an alarm
    • Installing a physical theft prevention device that locks the steering wheel or brakes
    • Parking in well-lit, well-traveled areas
    • Keeping your vehicle inside a locked garage whenever possible

If warming your car up at home is important, but you’d like to have some added security, consider installing Video Surveillance cameras. With our Total Connect app, you’ll be be able to check in on those cameras in real time. To learn more, call 1-800-265-5317 or just CLICK HERE.

  • Winter Tips

    Winter Tips

The weather is chilly, the leaves are off the trees, and snow has been on and off again. Winter is just about here, and it’s time for a few winter tips.

    Scrape

    1)      Service your Furnace / Air Conditioner. It’s the best time to call someone to check that your heating and cooling systems are in good working order. If you have someone clean it out, make sure there are no cracked pipes or dirty filters, you’ll reduce your energy bills, and reduce the risk of fire.
    2) Check that your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors are working properly. Change the batteries and test them out so you know they work. If you can get fire monitoring protection for your home, you should. It can save lives and reduce the risk of damage.
    3) Stock up on winter supplies. Make sure you have shovels, ice salt, ice scrapers, and other winter safety items in your home and car. Make sure you have storm shutters to protect your windows, duct tape, tarps, and other items.
    4) Check your emergency kits. Wherever you live, you can lose power, phone service, or get bad storms that could leave you housebound. Make sure you have enough food and clean water to last everyone in your home, and pets, for several days. Keep extra flashlights and batteries on hand, and if you use any medication, be sure to have a week’s supply in store, just in case.
    5) Clean up your yard. A little bit of maintenance can prevent further damage or clogged sewer drains.

    Shovel car

Figure out your own check list, and you can protect yourself from incurring costly repairs and dealing with unprepared emergencies in the future.

  • Winter Break & Enters

    Winter Break & Enters

A recent article on Windsorite.ca cites LaSalle police warning the public how easy you can become the victim of a break simply because of the weather.

According to the article, Police are putting out a warning to homeowners who could very easily be the victims of break and enters when it snows.

They report a spike in residential Break & Enter’s in the weeks leading up to Christmas last year. LaSalle Police say they even figured out just what types of homes criminals were targeting.

“A group of individuals were identified, located, and subsequently charged with numerous B&E’s in the LaSalle/Windsor area last year,” says Constable Jamie Nestor. “In speaking with them post arrest, we learned…they would drive through neighborhoods a couple days after a snowfall and look for an absence of traffic to and from a residence (ie. foot prints, tire tracks).”

    House snow

Nestor says crooks would then knock on the door. No answer? Break in.

    “It’s that simple,” says Nestor.

“If you’re going out of town, tell a family member, friend, or trusted neighbor to do one small favour for you. Have them drive up and down your driveway a few times after a snowfall and perhaps walk up to the front door to check for mail or papers. A couple of minutes can prevent a lot of misery.”

  • CO Detector Saved Local Family

    CO Detector Saved Local Family

A Windsor Star article cites The Tecumseh Fire Rescue Service as crediting a carbon monoxide detector for saving a local family from tragedy.

    tfd

Tecumseh Fire Chief Doug Pitre calls Carbon Monoxide the “silent killer.” He says that Carbon Monoxide makes you  feel nauseated or sluggish. “Some people attribute that to the flu,” Pitre said in the article. “You go to bed. And if it’s a large amount of CO in the house — you don’t wake up.”

Pitre and a deputy chief responded to a 911 call on the 1200 block of Shawnee Road where a married couple with a four-month-old infant son lived. According to the report, the mother was already feeling like she had a headache when the home’s CO detector sounded an alarm.

With her husband at work, she took herself and her child and to her parents’ place, while he came home to meet emergency responders

Her husband — who had been at work — went to the address and waited outside to speak with emergency responders. That’s when Chief Pitre said they found a high reading at the home.

Union Gas was contacted, and brought more sophisticated detection equipment. After a full search of the home, it was discovered that there was a “faulty connection” in the home’s furnace.

The furnace was shut off, scheduled for repair and the mother and child sent to a medical clinic.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning has been in the forefront of the local news recently after the death of an Amherstburg teenager earlier this month.

The Tecumseh Fire Chief told the Star he deals with 50 to 60 calls about carbon monoxide per year. About eight of those calls turn out to involve a potentially harmful level of CO.

It is now the law in Ontario for homes with gas burning appliances or attached garages to be equipped with a CO detector, as well as a smoke detector on every floor.  To ensure your home is compliant with the law, call 1-800-265-5317, or JUST CLICK HERE.

  • Dumb Criminal: Turtle Smuggler

    Dumb Criminal: Turtle Smuggler

This Dumb Criminal story comes from our own backyard!
A Canadian man has been charged after border agents at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel found illegal contraband  strapped to his body and hidden between his legs.

The Detroit News reported that Windsor, Ontario, resident was charged with smuggling, illegal trading and exporting. A bond hearing was scheduled Thursday in federal court in Detroit.

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent received a tip about a large box sent to a Detroit postal center. Court documents say it was addressed to the Windsor man and mailed from Alabama. Agents were watching the postal center on Aug. 5 when he  arrived.

The contraband being smuggled?  More than 50 red-eared slider turtles were found… strapped to his body and hidden between his legs – after the man’s SUV re-crossed the border and was stopped in Windsor.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the man had snapped up a lawyer, but he certainly did land in our Dumb Criminals Hall of Fame!

  • Ontario Carbon Monoxide Detector Law Now In Effect

Ontario Carbon Monoxide Detector Law Now In Effect

A new law out of Queen’s Park makes Carbon Monoxide warning devices mandatory in Ontario as of last Wednesday. The Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister of Ontario, Yasir Nagvi told the Toronto Sun that Carbon Monoxide is an odourless, colourless gas that kills about 50 Canadians, including 11 Ontarians, each year.

    5800CO_angle_hi

“We know that carbon monoxide gas is a silent killer,” Naqvi told the Sun Tuesday. “It’s a serious issue and that’s why we’re taking the additional step of requiring carbon monoxide detectors to be in place in all residential homes.”

The next few months will see an emphasis on public education, but failure to install a Carbon Monoxide detefctor now carries a fine of $235.

Bill 77 is an update to the Ontario Fire Code that requires the use of carbon monoxide warning devices in houses, condos, apartments, hotels and university residences that have a fuel-burning device such as a fireplace, gas stove, water heater or furnace — or if the home is attached to a garage.
