  • Social Media

    Social Media

    Social networking sites

Social networking sites are now a primary source for communicating and keeping in touch with friends and family. You share pictures, post updates and reveal all sorts of personal information about yourself – which makes these sites prime targets for criminal activity.

    Social-Media

    What are the risks?

    • Your personal information could be stolen by a cyber criminal, putting your identity and accounts at risk.
    • The personal information you share online could give cyber criminals enough to piece together your email address and password.
    • Cyber criminals could gain access to any account that has a password recovery service and use any saved information to make purchases.
    • Links in messages from cyber criminals posing as someone you know could be a part of a phishing attack trying to trick you into sharing personal information or contain malware that infects your computer.
    • Geotagged photos are photos that have geographical information, like your current location, added to them – and today, most smartphones and digital cameras have a function that automatically geotags all your photos unless you turn it off.  Geotags can expose where you live, when you’re traveling and even what car you drive, which could make you a target for robbery.
    • When you update your status with your whereabouts on a regular basis, you could tip someone off to your routine, and invite real-life threats like robberies, break-ins or stalking.
    • If you add “friends” you don’t know, you could become the victim of a scam.
    • Apps deleted from your account may not be fully deleted – the creator may still have access to your information.
    • If you don’t have a strong password, others could gain access to your profile and pose as you – and potentially send out spam or fake posts that are damaging to you.
    • Potential employers could search social networking sites to get a sense of your character. If you’ve uploaded damaging or embarrassing photos or posts to your social network account, you could hurt your reputation and your chances of employment.

Three of the easiest things you can do to be sure of your privacy on social networking sites are:

    • Choose a strong password that you change often
    • Take the time to set your privacy setting to control who can see what
    • Always think carefully about any information you choose to share online

  • Fire Planning

    Fire Planning

Fires can happen anywhere. A fire in a large building creates an enormous risk to everyone. Other reasons for evacuating buildings include natural gas leaks, earthquakes, hazardous material spills and storms. Knowing what to do is the key to surviving a fire emergency. Conducting regular fire drills will give you the knowledge and confidence to escape a fire safely. There are two steps for a good evacuation program – planning and practice.

    Flames
    Growth and Speed of Fire
The following is a timeline of an actual 2-story house fire. It will show you just how fast fire spreads:
    • :30 Fire ignites and grows rapidly.
    • 1:04 From first flame, fire spreads and smoke begins to fill room.
    • 1:35 Smoke layer descends rapidly, temperature exceeds 190°F.
    • 1:50 Smoke detector at foot of stairs alarms. Still time to get out.
    • 2:30 Temperature above couch over 400°F.
    • 2:48 Smoke pours into other rooms.
    • 3:03 Temperature three feet above floor in room of origin is over 500°F. (No one could survive.)
    • 3:20 Upstairs hall filled with smoke – Escape more difficult.
    • 3:41 FLASHOVER – Energy in room of origin ignites everything. Temperature is 1400°F.
    • 3:50 Two minutes after smoke detectors sounds, 2nd exit is only way out.
    • 4:33 Flames just now visible from exterior of house – first evidence of fire from outside. AT THIS POINT, RESCUE MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE.

    Planning
Planning gives you the information you need ahead of time to evacuate safely. In the workplace, employees and supervisors should plan together for exiting their worksite. At school, involve all school staff including teachers, administrative and office workers, and the maintenance and food service staff. Working together, design an evacuation plan to meet the specific needs of your building and your occupants. Make the plan clear and concise. Review the plan and walk through the exit procedure to make sure that everyone knows what to do.
Each building, whether it be a school, workplace or multi-family living unit, should have a posted exit diagram (plan) and everyone should be familiar with it.
Be sure that smoke detectors are installed and maintained. Know the sound of the fire alarm. Everyone should recognize and respond to the sound of the smoke detector or other fire alarm immediately. Immediate response is vital for a quick, orderly evacuation.
Everyone should exit in an orderly manner to prevent confusion and minimize panic or injury. No one should push their way out an exit. Single file lines are best in controlling traffic to the exits.
Consider special needs people. When developing your escape plan, remember that younger, older, or disabled people may need special assistance. Anyone with special needs should be located as close to an exit as possible. Train others to give special assistance with evacuation.
Be sure to know two ways out. There should be two ways out of every area of the home, school, or workplace. If the primary exit is blocked by smoke or fire, use your second exit. Point out all emergency exits as you walk through the emergency procedure.
Always use the stairways to exit multi-story buildings. Do not use an elevator. An elevator may stop between floors, or go to the fire floor and stop with the doors open.
If a room or corridor is filled with smoke, crawl low on your hands and knees to exit. The cleaner air is closer to the ground.
Plan your meeting place. A designated meeting place outside the building is a vital part of an evacuation plan. Count heads. Be aware of who is there (hopefully everybody will be accounted for) and who is not there. When the fire department arrives, you can report if there is anyone missing.
Know what to do if you can’t escape. You’ll need to plan your actions in case immediate escape is impossible. If possible, for example, stay in a room with an outside window and always close doors between you and the fire. Think about what you could use – sheets, towels, curtains, or even large pieces of clothing – to stuff around cracks near the door and wave as a signal to rescuers. Know how to open the window to ventilate smoke, but be prepared to close the window immediately if an open window makes the room smokier. If there is a phone, call the fire department with your location, even if firefighters are already on the scene. Remember, stay low in smoke until you’re rescued.

    HomeFireSafetyEscapePlanimage
    Practice
After planning, practice to make sure that everyone knows what to do. Have fire drills. Practice your fire escape periodically throughout the year. Remember, the element of surprise simulates a real fire and adds essential realism to your fire drill program. Appoint someone to monitor the drill. This person will sound the alarm and make the drill realistic by requiring participants to use their second way out or to crawl low. This could be done by having someone hold up a sign reading “smoke” or “exit blocked by fire.” The monitor also will measure how long complete evacuation takes.
Coordinate arrangements for fire drills in apartments or other multi-family homes, in schools or in workplaces with the local fire department.
After the evacuation, take a head count at the designated meeting place(s) to account for everyone’s participation and safe evacuation.
When everyone is back inside the building after the drill, gather everyone together to discuss any questions or problems that occurred during the drill. Redesign the drill procedures as needed. Make the next fire drill even more effective.
Remember, once you are outside, stay outside. Don’t go back in until the proper authorities say it is okay.

  • Why Monitoring Matters

Having a Home Security System is a lot like having a good friend that never gets tired and never needs to sleep or rest and is always keeping an eye on things and looking out for you and your home.   When you are sleeping your Security System waits and watches in case somebody tries to invade your home when you are most vulnerable. Your Security System keeps watch when you are away and your home is empty and if you have monitored smoke and carbon monoxide detectors your Security System keeps watch for fire and CO leaks too.

    Flooded Basement

With the right equipment your Security System also stands guard to watch your home against floods and water leaks as well as freezing temperatures that could cause pipes to rupture.  In the event of a fire or CO leak or a home invasion your friend the Security System needs to be able to tell somebody and that is where monitoring comes in.  Monitoring is your Security Systems lifeline.   When there is trouble your Security System is going to need somebody to tell, somebody who is always ready and trained to respond quickly and who will send the right help right away. That’s where the professional staff at Security ONE’s central monitoring station makes all the difference.

    Our people are:

1.) Local.    Not only is Security ONE locally owned and operated but our monitoring staff knows the area and can direct help right to your front door because they live where you live and not 200 miles away or even in another country.

2.) Ready to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.   Our monitoring staff is on duty every minute of every hour of every day of the year and we never outsource or subcontract this responsibility to anyone else.   It’s just too important of a job to trust to anyone but Security ONE trained professionals.

3.) Trained and certified.   Security ONE’s central monitoring station is ULC listed and our staff have attained the prestigious CSAA Five Diamond Certification which means our monitoring staff have been tested and found to meet or exceed the highest standards in the industry.

4.) Experienced.   At the end of the day there is no substitute for real world on the job experience.   Our central monitoring staff have years of experience responding to every kind of situation from contacting a homeowner to let them know they left the garage door open to dispatching Fire and EMS to a home fire. When there is real trouble and lives are in danger there is no substitute for an experienced trained professional who will remain calm and get you the help you need quickly.

    Local-Monitoring

If your Security System is like a good friend that never rests and watches over you and your home tirelessly waiting to sound the alarm in the event of a flood, fire or break-in then a Security System monitored by the professional staff at Security ONE is like that friend having the Police, Fire Department and EMS and a whole team of trained professionals ready to contact the right people at the right time with the right information in the event of a flood, a carbon monoxide leak, a fire, or a burglary. And, it can turn the lights on when it gets dark, adjust the thermostat when you are away and even send you a text message to let know when your kids get home safely from school.   A Security System is certainly a great friend to have on your side but without professional monitoring from Security ONE your friend becomes a helpless bystander forced to watch and unable to respond when you need them most.

  • Security Providers Matter

    Security Providers Matter

An alarm system is intended to detect a burglary, but it will not necessarily prevent one. A system is only as good as its user and should be installed along with good physical security reinforcement, like deadbolt locks, adequate lighting, secure basement windows and strong exterior doors.

    Multi-layer

There are two types of alarms: monitored and unmonitored. An unmonitored alarm may mean you rely on your neighbours to call the police, which may or may not happen. As for a monitored alarm, it is possible for thieves to cut the phone lines before they enter, which disables the alarm. Speak to an alarm company representative about obtaining a system, which does not use the telephone wires to send its signal to the alarm company or consider installing a telephone line shield, which protects the phone line. All monitored alarm systems are serviced by an intermediate private company prior to any notification of police.

    judy 4

There are numerous alarm companies with various features from which to choose, but when you are looking for an alarm company you should consider the following:

    • ask for recommendations from friends that have alarm systems or from your insurance agent
    • how long has the company been in business?
    • how many service facilities do they have?
    • do they possess adequate liability insurance?
    • are their employees bonded?

  • What Is Cellular Monitoring

    What Is Cellular Monitoring

For many years the only way to monitor your Security System and Fire Alarm System was to plug into the telephone line….and that worked really well for a long time and continues to work today. However, times change and technology has evolved and we now have a better way to monitor that offers the additional advantage of no wires at all!

    Parents_Athletics_600x275

Let’s be honest…we live in a wireless world. Every day people make hands free phone calls while driving their cars or send emails from the bleachers while watching the kids soccer game. Our cellular network in Southwestern Ontario is particularly strong and well maintained which allows us to offer our customers the great opportunity to add a Cellular Module that allows your Security System to communicate wirelessly with our Central Monitoring Station.

Once the mighty Cellular Module is installed, if strong winds bring down a tree and knock out telephone service in your area your Security System will continue to communicate with our Central Monitoring Station.   If your crazy neighbor digs up the cable while building a fence next door…no problem….your Security System will continue to transmit a signal. Even if the power goes out and every line going into your home is cut your Security System can still send a signal and we are able to monitor your system. All thanks to this little marvel of modern technology: the Cellular Module.

    TreeDown_BowneRoad1

Every day hundreds of people cancel their home phone and switch to Cellular. Smart and informed buyers are making the change to Cellular for their phone services and now they are also making the change to Cellular for their Security Monitoring Services.  A clear and strong Cellular signal sent by a Cellular Module from your Security Panel to our Central Monitoring Station is the best way to Monitor your System in 2015 and in the future. We want to provide you with the very best service possible and we know Cellular Monitoring will help us to accomplish that goal.

Wireless technology has brought us some truly amazing things like the TV Remote, WiFi, Remote Car Starter, GPS and now Cellular Security! Security ONE has made the commitment to you that we will stand watch 24/7/365 and we will respond when you need us to send help when there is trouble.   Help us help you by making the switch to Cellular Monitoring today!

  • Summer Home Safety Tips

    Summer Home Safety Tips

Secure it. Survey your property. Look for ways to get in. Be sure you have good locks on your doors. Lock up ladders, patio furniture, recycling bins and anything else a thief could use to climb up to a second-storey window. And never hide a key anywhere outside. Most criminals take advantage of opportunities, so a home that’s well protected is less likely to attract that kind of attention.

Keep it living.Your home is less likely to catch the attention of a thief if it looks like it’s being lived in. Draw the shades or curtains. Turn down the volume on your phone – constant ringing is a sure sign that you’re away – and don’t forget timers for your lights.

Maintain it.A home that’s well cared for is a less attractive target for thieves. Trim hedges that exceed window-height and cut evergreen branches up at least three feet from the ground to eliminate hiding places on your property. General maintenance also decreases the risk of other problems, especially water damage. Hot water tanks, toilets and pipes are the usual culprits, so keep them in good repair as prevention.

    house-yard

Shut it off.If you’re going on vacation for more than a few weeks, turn off the water to your home and drain the lines (turn on your taps for a few minutes and flush your toilets). The less water and pressure there is, the safer your home will be if a pipe, toilet or tank happens to burst. With the water on, even a tiny leak can cause devastating damage in a short period of time. Also shut off the gas and pilot lights in your furnace and electric appliances to minimize the chance of ignition if ever a gas leak occurs or the pilot light blows.

Make a friend. Find a friend or neighbour you trust to keep an eye on your home. Have her cut the grass, park a car in your driveway, pick up your mail and even put out some extra garbage on garbage day. Inside, she can occasionally adjust the blinds or other visible property. Guardians can also check for any water, fire or wind damage and stop it from spreading.

  • Reducing False Alarms

    Reducing False Alarms

According to Windsor Police, a false alarm is any alarm caused by human error or equipment problems requiring a police response, with no evidence of an actual crime having been committed or attempted.

Why are False Alarms a Problem?

    • Alarms were originally designed to protect lives and property. Properly installed, used and maintained, alarms are a real asset. When misused, they become a liability. The Windsor Police Service as well as the security companies, must spend a significant amount of time and money reacting to false alarms. The system users also experience the inconvenience of false alarms and the assessment of fines.
    • A false alarm can endanger responding officers and the whole community. It may delay the officers from responding to a real emergency.
    • False alarms can lead neighbours to ignore your alarm when it goes off. In effect, your security system becomes less reliable and less credible.
    • False alarms make you reluctant to arm your system, in effect exposing your home or business to undetected theft or damage.
    • False alarms can cost you fines, and in some instances abusers may even have police response suspended.

    technician_edit

What can you do to help reduce the amount of false alarms received?

    • Make sure everyone who has a key to your home or business knows how to operate the security system. Keep the name and number of your monitoring station handy.
    • Secure doors and windows before turning on the system.
    • Be aware of changes in the environment (ie. New animals, design changes, seasonal decorations, plants etc.)
    • Notify monitoring facility and Windsor Police Service of new installations, and any changes (ie. Name changes, new employees).
    • Check your batteries regularly
    • Equipment should be routinely inspected and maintained by qualified personnel.
    • Call your security company immediately if your system does not seem to be working properly.
    • An alarm system must be installed properly, maintained properly and used properly in order to be a deterrent against crime and perform to everyone’s expectations.

For an evaluation of your security system, or to schedule a service call, call 1-800-265-5317 or just CLICK HERE.
